Here are our predictions for coworking and the trends shaping the industry:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote workers find a home thanks to tech<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advancing digitization is a catalyst for flexible working practices. Ubiquitous WiFi and smart devices have combined to keep everyone connected, anywhere. Suddenly, it no longer mattered whether you were physically in the office or not &#8211; as long as you had a solid internet connection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This combination of connectivity and increasing demand for flexible work has helped drive the success of coworking spaces. Business owners don\u2019t have to lease a dedicated office and can, instead, allow remote workers to use coworking spaces as and when they need to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research also reveals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that remote employees are happier when they have access to a coworking space where they can learn, grow and succeed. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.officevibe.com\/blog\/11-incredible-coworking-statistics-infographic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annual Global Coworking Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Deskmag found that 64% of workers are better able to meet deadlines, 68% have better focus and 71% reported an increase in creativity when they used a coworking space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upcoming technical advances, such as the much-anticipated 5G network, will further enable coworking spaces to open their doors in more rural and suburban areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/allwork.space\/2018\/05\/5-fundamental-ways-proptech-will-revolutionise-real-estate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PropTech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another phenomenon that\u2019s slowly changing the property industry with the common goal of improving customer experience by transforming the agent-tenant relationship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not exclusive to coworking, PropTech is a blanket term to describe everything from robot receptionists to smart access systems that will help operators provide a 24\/7 and seamless user experience to tenants. It\u2019s the perfect fit for coworking spaces and will help tech-savvy spaces stand out from the crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of coworking &#8211; WeWork 2.0?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry incumbent WeWork\u2019s spaces are everywhere and the business was recently valued at a whopping <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$20 billion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-company-implosion-pageant-1537724159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> examined which current multi-billion-dollar valued businesses are most likely to fail. The article\u2019s author, Andy Kessler, wrote: \u201cventure capitalists are funding questionable businesses they pray will scale.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These questionable businesses share certain features, according to Kessler, including unproven business models, minimal sales and huge losses. In reaction to the <em>WSJ<\/em> piece, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allwork.space\/2018\/09\/wall-street-journal-confirms-what-industry-experts-have-said-all-along-about-wework\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one industry expert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writes: \u201cFor those in the flexible workspace industry, it\u2019s quite likely the first name that will pop into your mind is WeWork.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sustainability of WeWork\u2019s business model has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">come un<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">er fire<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from some in the industry. Others predict the future of work will only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/greatspeculations\/2018\/06\/26\/heres-how-the-future-of-work-can-drive-revenues-for-wework\/#6466279e154c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">further drive WeWork\u2019s growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s not just WeWork that&#8217;s at risk. A question remains about the entire coworking industry\u2019s ability to survive a major market downturn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Kessler\u2019s article, this type of business model \u201cworks great in up cycles but is still unproven, especially in downturns&#8230;what happens when startups disappear and WeWork gets stuck with a lot of expensive space?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boom or bust, it\u2019ll be interesting to see how the wider coworking business model and those models from the likes of WeWork adapt over the next few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corporates and niche spaces invade coworking<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coworking business model is already adapting to changes in the industry as corporates enter the market and demand for specialist spaces increases. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research reveals an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing number of corporates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are turning to coworking to embrace innovation and flexible work practices. While some corporates are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allwork.space\/2018\/02\/coworking-niche-spaces-are-the-future-of-the-workspace-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">setting up their own spaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many are turning to established coworking brands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, WeWork has 20,000 companies on its books, and those businesses with 1,000 employees or more are now its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fastest-growing segment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One-fifth of companies of that size make up WeWork&#8217;s customer base, including big names such as Facebook, Microsoft, Pinterest, Salesforce, Samsung, and Starbucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coworking spaces that target a specific industry will also flood the market. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niche spaces are already starting to open their doors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but will continue to thrive and meet the needs of the startup and freelance communities, as larger coworking brands take on corporate clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because such niche spaces tailor their approach to the industries they serve, providing them with the ability to stand out and survive an increasingly saturated coworking market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coworking, anywhere<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coworking is a global phenomenon. There are now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coworker.com\/map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 4,000 flexible spaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in more than 100 countries around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coworking is also breaking out of traditional spaces. For example, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restaurants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">libraries<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are already adopting coworking spaces to fill off-peak hours and boost their income.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The retail industry is another <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emerging area<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for coworking. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research reveals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coworking spaces in malls, street fronts and other retail properties will grow at an annual rate of 25% through 2023 to reach about 3.4 million square feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other new entrants to the market include boutique Space-as-a-Service businesses, like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/workbold.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that create flexible workspaces with a smaller footprint compared to the likes to WeWork. For example, a floor of a building could easily be transformed into a coworking space, giving corporates and landlords an easy entry point into flexible working.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conclusion<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The coworking industry isn\u2019t just expanding at an impressive rate &#8211; it\u2019s also innovating and adapting to meet the demands of the future of work by combining technical innovation, a vast variety of business models, global availability and a cross-industry appeal.
