It<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0was commissioned by the five-and-dime store entrepreneur Frank W. Woolworth, who funded its $13.5 million construction in cash, which translates to approximately $350 million in 2018 dollars. Soaring above City Hall Park on a full-block site on Broadway, it now stands as a monument to American capitalism and the limitless nature of New York\u2019s real estate market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Woolworth Building has a flamboyant past. When it originally opened in 1913, President Woodrow Wilson pressed a button in the White House and 80,000 light bulbs lit up the entire facade, supervised by inventor Thomas Edison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edison was one of the many luminaries in attendance at the building\u2019s prestigious opening night. Dubbed \u2018the highest dinner ever held in New York\u2019 by the press, a lavish banquet ensued in honor of the building\u2019s architect, Cass Gilbert. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governors, congressmen, judges and other high-powered businessmen were all in attendance. \u201cIt was a celebration of the filthy rich, possibly one of the most indulgent dinners of the Gilded Age,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boweryboyshistory.com\/2013\/04\/the-woolworth-building-at-100-how-they.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to one report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening ceremony was as remarkable as the building itself. Because the construction was funded solely by Woolworth, with no loans or help from developers, he had complete freedom of design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilbert and Woolworth decided on a Beaux-Arts design with Gothic details. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/inside-new-york-citys-woolworth-building-2017-3?r=US&amp;IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interior features<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a yellow marble cathedral-like lobby with sculptures, mosaics, and a gold-decked ceiling. Caricatures of Woolworth counting his dimes and Gilbert cradling a model of the building in his arms feature in this lobby area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The building housed several groundbreaking features for the time including exterior lighting, water supply system and high-speed electric elevators. It was home to a shopping arcade, barber shop, restaurant, health club, and social club. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woolworth&#8217;s private office was also modeled and furnished to resemble Napoleon&#8217;s Compi\u00e8gne palace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The construction became an instant landmark and soon became known as \u201cthe cathedral of commerce\u201d. Standing at more than 793 feet, it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviewoncities.com\/nyc\/woolworth.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly attracted 100,000 visitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every year who flocked to the tower\u2019s 58th story observation deck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Woolworth Building won widespread acclaim for its pioneering steel-frame structure at a time when skyscrapers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/brief-history-skyscraper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were only just starting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take over the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/commercial-real-estate-news\/skylines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skyline<\/a>. This was a time when architects were trying to reach a consensus about what a skyscraper should look like. Unlike the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/office-building-week-flatiron-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flatiron Building<\/a>, the Woolworth Building&#8217;s slender design later became a blueprint for the world\u2019s skyscrapers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>The Woolworth Building Now<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 100 years later, the Woolworth Building\u2019s original glory remains. But the building has largely remained closed to the general public in recent times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Woolworth Building was sold to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/landmarks\/woolworth-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Witkoff Group for $155 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1998, marking the first time the building changed ownership since its inception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in 2013 and thanks to the efforts of Cass Gilbert\u2019s great-granddaughter, Helen Post-Curry, private tours were organized for the building\u2019s centenary. Thanks to the popularity of these tours, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regular historic and paid tours<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are now available of the building\u2019s lobby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the building\u2019s observation deck on the 58th floor closed during World War II,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/the-woolworth-building-new-york-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly out of fear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that enemy spies could exploit its harbor views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, the first of the 33 brand-new luxury condos were put up for sale following an extensive conversion on the building&#8217;s 29th to 58th floors. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woolworth Tower Residences<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the work of famed French architect Thierry W. Despont. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The full-floor condos were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly offered<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at $26.4 million. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ny.curbed.com\/2015\/7\/28\/9936086\/peek-inside-the-woolworth-buildings-110m-penthouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curbed NY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported a listing price of $110 million for the extraordinary five-story Pinnacle Penthouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A range of office and retail leasing opportunities are available in the Woolworth building. Its tenants include ShoP Architects, the Rainforest Alliance, Starbucks, and the New York City Police Pension Fund.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing at 60-stories high, the Woolworth Building is still a New York landmark. American architectural critic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewoolworthtower.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Goldberger describes it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cthe Mozart of skyscrapers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Woolworth Building\u00a0in New York City was once the tallest building in the world.
