We\u2019re living in technologically advanced times of accelerating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/18-must-tools-digital-nomads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connectivity<\/a> and demographic shifts. Yet, there is a \u201csignificant gap\u201d between the supply and demand for flexible working, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/werk.co\/research\/the-future-is-flexible-werk-flexibility-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are working longer hours with less time to take care of themselves and those they care for. This new normal impacts employee health, happiness, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/dos-donts-improve-productivity-open-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">productivity<\/a>,\u201d the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Future is Flexible <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study from Werk.co reveals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A staggering 96% of the U.S. workforce \u201cneeds some form of flexibility\u201d and yet only 42% have access to the flexibility they need. Only 19% have access to a range of flexible options, according to the report, which surveyed more than 1,500 U.S. professionals across industries, geographies, and other key demographics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flexible working gap is more pronounced for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/6-austin-based-companies-that-offer-awesome-perks-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women<\/a> and non-parents, with only 34% and 33% having access to the flexibility they need, respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, approximately half of the millennials, male workers and parents surveyed have access to their desired level flexibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>What is flexible working?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u2018flexible working\u2019 is in itself a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/what-is-agile-working\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moveable feast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The report identifies six key flexible working practices, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TimeShift<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8211; employees can reorder their working hours to create an unconventional structure, outside the normal 9 to 5.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MicroAgility\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; employees have the flexibility to step away from their work for one to three hours, but must communicate this with their peers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeskPlus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8211; employees can vary their working location but are based out of a company office.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote &#8211; employees work independently of any office and can work from anywhere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TravelLite<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8211; employees have minimal to no travel, with a maximum of two to four hours traveling time per month.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part-time &#8211; employees can work a reduced number of hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most in-demand flexible work option across all demographics was the ability to work away from the office for a portion of the working week. Some 84% of respondents want the DeskPlus option at their work. However, only 21% of respondents have access to this method.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MicroAgility came next, with 82% wanting access to this flexible working method &#8211; but it is only available to just over a quarter (26%) of the respondents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 49% of respondents wanted part-time hours to be available to them, making this the least desirable flexible working option. But men and, in particular, millennial men, had the highest interest in part-time work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>The damage of inflexible working<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research identified three key areas that are negatively impacted when employees lack access to flexibility. These include caregiving to dependents, health and wellness, and staff productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \u201csignificant burden\u201d is placed on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/coworking-childcare-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working parents<\/a>, according to the report, which also hints at the changing roles in the raising of children. The report reveals: \u201cMillennial men are particularly keen on exploring flexibility as a way to take on a more equal load of caregiving responsibilities.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flexible working also helps employees engage in preventative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/sitting-desk-day-killing-heres-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health measures<\/a>, such as taking regular exercise, attending medical appointments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/avoid-repetitive-strain-injuries-digital-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">managing illnesses<\/a>, or getting enough sleep every night. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of flexibility also negatively impacts the performance and productivity for one-third of the workforce, the report reveals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>How flexible working benefits businesses<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees without access to flexibility were twice as likely to report being dissatisfied at work and 50% of employees said they would leave their job to find a more flexible alternative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, flexible work options have a largely positive impact on organizational metrics, including employee retention, engagement, and net promoter scores (eNPS). In fact, those employees with access to flexibility have an eNPS that\u2019s 48 points higher, compared to workers without access to flexibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also highlights a range of other positive organizational outcomes by providing flexible working practices. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Gender diversity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the report found 95% of women need access to flexibility, but only 34% have access to the flexibility they need. Some 26% of employees with flexibility were more likely to believe their company is doing what it takes to improve gender equality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>An inclusive workplace: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the report found employees with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/blog\/make-office-space-disability-friendly-using-expertise-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">access to flexibility<\/a> are 20% more likely to believe they work in an environment that fosters diverse points of view.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Employer brand:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flexibility is a differentiator to attract talent, according to the report, where employees with flexibility were 16% more likely to feel their ideas are valued.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Next steps for flexible working<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what can companies do to leverage flexibility? The report recommends the following steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Utilize a flexibility framework: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this provides a standardized dialogue between organizations and employees to put flexible working practices into place.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Assess needs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tailor your flexibility options to your staff and their individual needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Create customizations: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design processes and policies with the greatest impact on your workforce, and provide customization options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Communicate broadly:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take the guesswork out of flexibility by communicating your policies and available programs.
