According to a Seattle Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/business\/amazon\/huge-downtown-seattle-office-space-that-amazon-had-leased-is-reportedly-put-on-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>, the company will no longer occupy the office section of the 982,000-square-foot Rainier Square Tower currently underway in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/office\/us\/wa\/seattle\/downtown-seattle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle\u2019s central business district<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On February 14th, the company released a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.aboutamazon.com\/company-news\/update-on-plans-for-new-york-city-headquarters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> announcing its HQ2 withdrawal from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/office\/us\/ny\/queens\/long-island-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Long Island City<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/commercial-real-estate\/us\/ny\/queens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queens, New York<\/a>. While the $3 billion bail on Amazon\u2019s part was a surprise to almost everyone involved, the tech giant had yet to abandon any plans in its hometown of Seattle, construction, lease or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon hit rough waters with the Seattle City Council in 2018 because of a proposed \u201chead tax\u201d the city wanted to impose on large employers in an effort to address homelessness and its affordable housing crisis. Initially, Amazon had considered a possible sublease of the office space at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/commercial-property\/us\/wa\/seattle\/rainier-square-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rainier Square Tower<\/a>, along with a construction hiatus of its Block 18 development in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialcafe.com\/office\/us\/wa\/seattle\/belltown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Belltown<\/a> if the Seattle City Council didn\u2019t repeal the proposed head tax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can confirm that pending the outcome of the head tax vote by City Council, Amazon has paused all construction planning on our Block 18 project in downtown Seattle and is evaluating options to sub-lease all space in our recently leased Rainier Square building,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/amazon-fires-back-at-seattles-proposed-head-tax-pauses-construction-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Amazon Vice President Drew Herdener at the time.<\/p>\n<p>In an interesting turn of events, amid pressure from several large companies, and referendum threats, the Seattle City Council announce the <a href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/amazon-fires-back-at-seattles-proposed-head-tax-pauses-construction-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">repeal<\/a> of the tax in June 2018. Even so, the company chose to back out of the 722,000-square-foot office lease it had announced in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/seattle\/news\/2017\/04\/25\/amazon-eyes-rainier-square-tower.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">early 2017<\/a>, while construction of its 412,000-square-foot Block 18 office tower resumed.<\/p>\n<p>The Rainier Square Tower is scheduled for completion in early 2020 and comprises 982,000 square feet of space.
