But,\u00a0its\u00a0recent explosion in popularity\u00a0\u2014\u00a0whether that be out of necessity\u00a0or\u00a0ability\u00a0\u2014\u00a0is striking.\u00a0In fact, we\u2019re\u00a0currently in the largest work-from-home experiment in history.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0recent\u00a0months, trends in Google searches for terms like \u201cwork from home\u201d have spiked in popularity to\u00a0the\u00a0highest levels\u00a0recorded\u00a0since at least\u00a02004.\u00a0Interest in search terms is quantified by Google Trends using a scale of 0 to 100.\u00a0The higher the number, the higher the interest, with 100 signifying\u00a0peak\u00a0interest\u00a0in that term.<\/p>\n<h2>Google Trends\u00a0Shows Spike\u00a0Across\u00a0U.S.<\/h2>\n<p>In particular, the trends for the term \u201cwork from\u00a0home\u201d in\u00a0California, Washington, New York\u00a0and\u00a0Texas\u00a0show how much of\u00a0an influence\u00a0the pandemic is having across the nation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"52a1ac82-6b80-40df-97aa-c52fdc12297f\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"&amp;#39;Work from home&amp;#39; - Google Trends\"><\/div>\n<p><script>!function(e,i,n,s){var t=\"InfogramEmbeds\",d=e.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement(\"script\");o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\",d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,\"infogram-async\");<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Washington\u00a0state,\u00a0which confirmed\u00a0the first\u00a0case\u00a0of COVID-19\u00a0in the U.S. on January 20th,\u00a0registered the highest popularity reading in our study on March 5th. With 70 cases\u00a0of the virus\u00a0reported at that time, residents started looking at working from home as a definite possibility, if not\u00a0a\u00a0necessity.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0it wasn\u2019t just Washington.\u00a0Indeed,\u00a0the nation started taking this seriously with a noticeable uptick in searches\u00a0beginning\u00a0in early March. As news\u00a0traveled, cities around the globe started taking various measures to slow the spread.\u00a0We can see a general rise and fall across the country for the search term, but the trend is,\u00a0undoubtedly,\u00a0upward.<\/p>\n<p>But working from home\u00a0is\u00a0not a new phenomenon.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0actually\u00a0been expanding across the nation\u00a0\u2014 and the world \u2014 for years.<\/p>\n<h2>Colorado: Largest Percentage of WFH Workers<\/h2>\n<p>We compiled\u00a0data\u00a0on\u00a0working from home\u00a0from the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Census Bureau. Specifically, we compared how the\u00a0millennial\u00a0cohort\u00a0especially\u00a0is adopting and transitioning to\u00a0working from home and which professions were most common for WFH from 2014 to 2018 in all 50 states.\u00a0Of the total U.S. labor force, 4.49% were working from home\u00a0in 2014.\u00a0Four years later, that number had increased to 5.34%\u00a0\u2014\u00a0representing\u00a0a total of\u00a08.25 million people\u00a0working from home.<\/p>\n<p>The map below breaks down these statistics by state.\u00a0Hover over\u00a0the states for more details.<\/p>\n<div id=\"viz1585302508298\" class=\"tableauPlaceholder\" style=\"position: relative;\"><noscript><a href='#'><img alt=' ' src='https:&#47;&#47;public.tableau.com&#47;static&#47;images&#47;20&#47;2018WFHPopulation&#47;WFH2018&#47;1_rss.png' style='border: none' \/><\/a><\/noscript><object class=\"tableauViz\" style=\"display: none;\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\"><param name=\"host_url\" value=\"https%3A%2F%2Fpublic.tableau.com%2F\" \/><param name=\"embed_code_version\" value=\"3\" \/><param name=\"site_root\" value=\"\" \/><param name=\"name\" value=\"2018WFHPopulation\/WFH2018\" \/><param name=\"tabs\" value=\"no\" \/><param name=\"toolbar\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"static_image\" value=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/static\/images\/20\/2018WFHPopulation\/WFH2018\/1.png\" \/><param name=\"animate_transition\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"display_static_image\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"display_spinner\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"display_overlay\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"display_count\" value=\"yes\" \/><\/object><\/div>\n<p><script type='text\/javascript'>                    var divElement = document.getElementById('viz1585302508298');                    var vizElement = divElement.getElementsByTagName('object')[0];                    if ( divElement.offsetWidth > 800 ) { vizElement.style.width='1024px';vizElement.style.minHeight='587px';vizElement.style.maxHeight='727px';vizElement.style.height=(divElement.offsetWidth*0.75)+'px';} else if ( divElement.offsetWidth > 500 ) { vizElement.style.width='100%';vizElement.style.height=(divElement.offsetWidth*0.75)+'px';} else { vizElement.style.width='100%';vizElement.style.height='727px';}                     var scriptElement = document.createElement('script');                    scriptElement.src = 'https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/javascripts\/api\/viz_v1.js';                    vizElement.parentNode.insertBefore(scriptElement, vizElement);                <\/script><\/p>\n<p>Colorado leads the nation with the highest percentage of\u00a0WFH\u00a0jobs\u00a0at 8.56%\u00a0\u2014\u00a0representing\u00a0more than\u00a0a quarter of a million people.\u00a0Not far behind,\u00a07.46% of the workforces in\u00a0Vermont and Oregon\u00a0have WFH jobs.\u00a0However,\u00a0in Vermont,\u00a0that represents just\u00a0over\u00a024,000 workers,\u00a0while in Oregon it\u2019s nearly 150,000.\u00a0California has the largest labor market,\u00a0so it makes sense that it\u00a0also\u00a0has the largest\u00a0absolute\u00a0number of people working from home in the nation\u00a0\u2014\u00a0more than 1.1 million, or 6% of all jobs\u00a0in the state.<\/p>\n<h2>Fastest Growing WFH Workforce:\u00a0South Carolina<\/h2>\n<p>The vast majority of\u00a0jobs in the country are in a relatively small\u00a0number\u00a0of states. We took the top\u00a020 states by workforce size and identified how WFH evolved between 2014 and 2018. In all cases, the number of people who worked from home increased at least 29% over that time period.<\/p>\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"41ff821d-7a35-4f37-ab1b-4f55b487222d\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"Work from Home Population % Increase\"><\/div>\n<p><script>!function(e,i,n,s){var t=\"InfogramEmbeds\",d=e.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement(\"script\");o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\",d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,\"infogram-async\");<\/script><\/p>\n<p>South Carolina experienced the largest growth in working from home\u00a0with an increase of\u00a058% in just four years. It was followed by Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Texas and North Carolina, all\u00a0with growth rates\u00a0greater than 40%. In most cases, the professions that experienced the most WFH growth\u00a0were professional and scientific services, which\u00a0management and administration fall under.<\/p>\n<h2>Millennial\u00a0Remote Workers:\u00a0Built for This<\/h2>\n<p>Millennials were built to work from home\u00a0\u2014\u00a0maybe not as much as Gen Z, but\u00a0Millennials are\u00a0internet\u00a0natives,\u00a0nonetheless.\u00a0So, it comes as no surprise that\u00a0Millennials are the fastest-growing generation\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0working from home. Nationally, 4.61% of Millennials worked from home in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The interactive chart below shows the share of working Millennials that work from home in each of the previously listed states, by year.\u00a0 You can switch years using the tabs above the chart.<\/p>\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"fdf7c056-9661-4df9-aaff-52bb7200af38\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"Millennial Work from Home - 2014 to 2018\"><\/div>\n<p><script>!function(e,i,n,s){var t=\"InfogramEmbeds\",d=e.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement(\"script\");o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\",d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,\"infogram-async\");<\/script><\/p>\n<p>From 2014 to 2018, roughly 2,600 Millennials started\u00a0working from home in Alaska and more than 17,000 in South Carolina \u2014 registering an increase of 67% in both states. Similarly,\u00a0Louisiana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, North Carolina, Tennessee and Colorado jumped by more than 50%.\u00a0Notably,\u00a0Utah also has the highest share of Millennials working from home at\u00a07.68%, followed by Colorado at 7.4%.\u00a0Surprisingly,\u00a0Millennials in\u00a0Oregon,\u00a0which has the 30th\u00a0largest workforce of the 50 states, have 7.1%.<\/p>\n<h2>Beneficial Trade-Offs of WFH<\/h2>\n<p>If more people are working from home, that means\u00a0fewer\u00a0are spending time in traffic every morning.\u00a0So, how many hours per year could we save? Obviously, it varies by state and even city, but it works\u00a0out\u00a0to quite a lot. Think about your job. If you\u00a0didn\u2019t have to commute, how much time would you save? Our interconnected world is increasingly allowing us to conduct more and more business virtually. Conferencing technologies like Slack, Zoom and Microsoft Teams make managing teams, clients and projects extremely easy. And, right now, we\u2019re experiencing just how far we can push these technologies.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just the obvious office work industries that are transitioning either\u00a0\u2014 education and healthcare services are also a large part of the professional\u00a0community\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0working from home.\u00a0For instance, the high cost of\u00a0education have led to a surge in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/03\/what-the-shift-to-virtual-learning-could-mean-for-the-future-of-higher-ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online education courses<\/a>. In addition to being easier on our personal finances, they also can handle larger class sizes and offer students more flexible schedules. But\u00a0we also have\u00a0an aging population\u00a0and they\u2019re\u00a0in\u00a0need\u00a0of more care.
