Jackson is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Ohio. It is located approximately 27 miles southeast of Chillicothe. The population was 6,239 at the 2020 census. Jackson is at the crossroads of State Routes 35 and 32 in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Jackson County comprises the Jackson, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area. The county is within two hours of five major cities and seven interstate highways, and within 500 miles of two-thirds of the population of the United States. Jackson County has restructured its economy in the last four decades. Healthcare has boomed with a $56 million investment that includes a new comprehensive medical center. A diversified economy provides employment opportunities in food processing, cabinet making, the automotive industry and many other areas, including agriculture. Three universities within 40 miles of the county provide intellectual growth for its high school graduates. The County boasts museums, galleries, and renovated theaters for the art lovers. The area is abundant with state parks and nature preserves which offer camping, fishing, biking, hiking and horse back riding. The historical hot spots include petroglyphs, civil war battlefields, early African-American settlements, 19th century iron furnaces, a Welsh Heritage trail, a covered bridge trail, local history museums, a 19th century settlement village, and a memorial to John Wesley Powell. The opportunities for enjoyment are abundant, with outstanding hunting and fishing along with many festivals and fairs. The Jackson County Apple Festival, held the third full week in September of each year, is considered one of the state’s premier festivals.
