Acquisition

Acquisition is the process of buying or otherwise taking ownership or control of a property or a portfolio. It generally moves through a sequence: finding target properties, running due diligence, lining up financing, negotiating terms, and closing.

An acquisition is guided by investment strategy, whether core, value-add, or opportunistic, and each step calls for a hard look at market conditions, physical condition, financial performance, and legal title. Institutional investors, private equity firms, REITs, and individual buyers all use acquisitions as the main way to build and grow a real estate portfolio.
